Helen Louise Regan O'Brien, 89, formerly of 132 Elwood Ave., died April 5, 1995, in Marian Manor nursing home, in Virginia Beach.
Mrs. O'Brien was born in Medford, Wisconsin, on March 26, 1906. She was the widow of Captain William J. O'Brien, USN, Ret. and they were married for more than sixty-three years. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Norfolk.
Mrs. O'Brien was one of four children of the late Timothy and Matilda Regan. Helen O'Brien graduated with honors from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota, with the class of 1926. She taught English and tutored Latin until she married Lieutenant William J. O'Brien, USN. in San Diego, California, on June 8, 1929. As a new Navy wife, Mrs. O'Brien followed her husband's ship to the China Station and then lived in the Orient for the next two years. After traveling extensively, she and her family settled in Norfolk in 1947. Mrs. O'Brien taught as a substitute teacher in the Norfolk school system. She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and sang in the choir for many years.
Survivors include 4 sons; Captain John T. O'Brien, USN, Ret. and his wife, Bert, of Amherst, N.H., Dr. Daniel H. O'Brien and his wife, Barbara of Bryan, Tx., William J. O'Brien Jr. JDD and his wife, Carol, of Warwick, R.I., and Captain Michael F. O'Brien, USN, Ret. and his wife, Patricia, of Springfield, Va.; 2 sisters, Frances and Florence Regan of Waukesha, WI.; 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on April 11, 1995, Tuesday, in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by Fr. Julian B. Goodman. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. A Christian Wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts.
