Gladys Smith Balyeat was born on January 14, 1904 in Holdenville, Oklahoma. She passed away on May 11, 2002. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Smith. After graduating from Holdenville High School, she attended Cresent College in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. She was blessed by her marriage to Joe S. Ellis, Sr. of Shawnee, Oklahoma, who preceded her in death. She received a second blessing by her marriage to Dr. Ray M. Balyeat of Oklahoma City who also preceded her in death. She enjoyed the many friends she made in the Oklahoma Art League, English Speaking Union, Blue Stocking Club and her church circle. She was fond of traveling and she was an avid gardener and walked frequently for exercise. She was a devoted member of the Crown Heights Christian Church. In 1973, she was chosen Oklahoma Mother of the Year. She is survived by five sons and their wives: Robert S. Ellis and Nancy, Joe S. Ellis and Eunice, Richard F. Ellis and Carla, Charles W. Ellis and Dorothy and Hal D. Balyeat and Marilyn. She is also survived by a sister, Lois Brown of Shawnee, 18 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
