Charles J. McCann
'Charlie'

Charlie McCann of Charlotte was born in 1922, the only child of Edward Aloysius McCann and Anna Marie Frain and enjoyed life to the fullest until his death on December 13, 2010.

He was married to Beverly Jane Owens for fifty-five years. Together they had four children, Mac, Mark, Tim, and Bev; twelve grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Beverly had been Charlie's sweetheart since high school. During his tour of duty in World War II, he named his fighter plane 'Lady Beverly.' Beverly developed Parkinson's disease in the later stages of her life. Charlie was her sole care giver and a devoted husband until her passing in December 2000.

Six years after Beverly's death, Charlie met Margaret Smith while taking dance classes at a local church. They were married four years ago and have enjoyed each other's companionship while dancing to the Glenn Miller Orchestra and other big band greats.

A native Charlottean, Charlie attended the O'Donoghue School (now St. Patrick's School), and was a paperboy for The Charlotte Observer. After graduating from Charlotte Central High School, he entered the Army Air Corps at the age of 18 to serve his country in World War II. Captain Charles McCann, a fighter pilot with the First Fighter Group, 71st Fighter Squadron, flew a Lockheed P-38 Lighting in the following battles and campaigns: Sicily, Tunesia, Air off Europe, Naples-Foggia, and Air off Balkans. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, EAME Ribbon with 5 Battle Stars Unit Citation (15 AF, GO 1482 1 July 44), and the American Defense Ribbon.

After being honorably discharged in October 1945, he attended N.C. State College under the GI Bill. Charlie graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked for Ford Motor Company for 30 years. While working and raising a family in Charlotte, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserve and was honorably discharged from service in June 1968. One of Charlie's proudest days was visiting the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. This trip, the 'Flight of Honor,' was sponsored by the Rotary Club.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 AM. Interment will be at Sharon Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Rotary District 7680, 841 Baxter St, Ste 118, Charlotte, NC 28202 in support of the 'Flight of Honor;' or to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh St, Charlotte, NC 28204, who helped care for Beverly in the last stage of her Parkinson's disease.
