Martin L. Grove, 90, of Waterloo, Iowa, and formerly of Denver, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, November 4, 2009, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo from complication of congestive heart failure.

Martin was born on October 9, 1919, on a farm in Chickasaw County near New Hampton, Iowa, the son of Gilman and Minnie (Gerstenkorn) Grove. He received his education in a rural school through the 8th grade. Following his schooling, Martin worked with his father who ran a sawmill and did carpenter work. Martin was rejected from the service because of inner ear problems. He then went to San Francisco and attended Samuel Gompers trade school to learn welding and boiler-making which he gradated from. He went to work for an oil refinery as a pipe welder. After the war he returned to Waterloo and joined the Plumbers and Pipe fitters Union with whom he remained for 45 years as a pipe welder and taught welding and pipe fitting at the union's apprentice school. He was vice-president of the Local 384 for several years. On October 15, 1949, Martin was united in marriage to Grace E. Spangenberg in Armstrong, Iowa. The couple made their home in the New Hampton area before moving to Denver in 1962. Grace died on October 7, 1997, and in 1999, Martin moved to Waterloo.

Martin is survived by his son, James (Yvonne) Botemma of La Porte City, IA; 3 step-daughters, Mary Lou Martin of Jacksonville, FL, Beverly (Bob) Lunstrom of St. Johns, MI, Patricia Goldstein of GA; a step-son, Robert Bailey of Augusta, GA; several grandchildren and step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Grace; a brother, Clarence Oliver Grove and a step-daughter, Alice Rish.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver, with Pastor Victoria L. Shepherd officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. Public visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until services at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver, Iowa.
