Son of James Rice and Lucinda A. (Bryson) Rice. Stepson of Mary J. (Wilbanks) Rice. Enlisted in Co. A, 28th Iowa Infantry on January 4, 1864 and died during his service to the country on October 24, 1864. Fielding was a native of Benton County, Iowa. He was 21 years old. Fielding's older brother, Nathan Rice, was also killed fighting for the Union Army in 1862. Nathan died at age 22.

Fielding was severely wounded during the Battle of Cedar Creek and his leg was amputated on October 19, 1864. He died of wounds October 24, 1864 at Martinsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia). Sadly, the Battle of Cedar Creek, where Fielding was wounded, would be the last battle his regiment would partake in during the Civil War.
