Husband of Mary (Willbanks) Floyd Rice (1814-1897) who was his third wife with whom he had one son. His second wife was Lucinda A. (Bryson) Rice (1816-1854) with whom he had six children. His first wife was Margaret S. (Hunt) Rice who died before 1842. He had three childen with Margaret. James was the son of Nathan Rice and Sarah (Poyner) Rice.
He married Margaret on Aug. 13, 1834. He married Lucinda on Oct. 25, 1841 and he married Mary in 1854.
Two of James' sons were killed during the Civil War. His oldest son, Nathan Rice, was killed at Pea Ridge, Arkansas in 1862 and his second oldest son, Fielding Rice, was killed in Cedar Creek, Virginia in 1864. James was elected County Commissioner for Benton County, Iowa in 1851, had been on the Board of Supervisors for eight years and was a Justice of the Peace for Benton County for over 20 years as well as being a farmer.
