Supreme Court Justice - Territory of Oregon (1851-1853)
For the most part, New York and Peekskill in particular was the center of his life. While at Williams college, he began his law career by working in the New York law office of Henry B. Cowles. After graduation from Williams College, he returned to Peekskill to his father's law office (Wm. Nelson) to prepare for the Bar exam. He passed the Bar exam and then joined his father's practice as a partner in 1842. He also worked with his bother Wm Rufus Nelson. He married in 1844. He was appointed by President Filmore as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Territory of Oregon from 1851 to 1853. He returned to Peekskill where he resumed his law practice in New York City. He and Lucien Birdseye ran as the Republican candidates for Justices of the Supreme Court, but lost to John W. Brown and John A. Lott. Active in the life of his Alma Mater, Williams College, he was elected a Trustee in 1869. He died at his residence in Peekskill.
