Evelyn Turner Anderton, 97, of Roanoke, Va., and Naples, Fla., passed away on Sunday, December 12, 2010. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 72 years, Thomas V. Anderton Sr.; her parents, Cleve and Emma Turner; brothers, Everett Turner and Marvin Turner; a sister, Mary Hobson; and a grandson, Bruce Anderton. She is survived by one brother, Norris Turner, of Troutville, Va.; her five children, Bobby Anderton and wife, Mary Margaret, Ernie Anderton and wife, Jeri Lynn, Thomas V. Anderton II and wife, Sharon, and Michael Anderton; daughter, Sue Brinkley; her grandchildren, Barry Laughon and wife, Sarah, Scott Laughon, Traci Miles, Craig Anderton and wife, Paige, Drew Anderton, Bradley Anderton, and Susan Carter Anderson and husband, Dave. Also surviving are her seven great-grandchildren. She was the State Highway Safety Chairman for Virginia in 1954 and was honored with an award from President Eisenhower. She served as Chairman of the Roanoke County Women's Club. Evelyn was an accomplished golfer and played until she was 94. She played in the Virginia State Amateur tournament for over 50 consecutive years, well into her late eighties. The "Anderton Trophy" is given every year in her honor by the Roanoke City-County tournament. She also loved water aerobics and swam weekly until the end of her life. Evelyn spent her entire career in the fashion industry and owned and operated The Balmoral, a women's clothing store for 38 years. Mrs. Anderton was a member of Windsor Hills Methodist Church and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church building fund or to the Rescue Mission. Funeral Services will be held 3 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2010, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Branan G. Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.
