Ralph J. Vanderpool, 87, of Sedalia, formerly of Marshall, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall, with Rev. Steve Raglin and Rev. Jerry Scott officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church in Marshall. Friends may sign the online register book at

Born Aug. 1, 1923, in Rolfe, Iowa, he was the son of the late Noble Vanderpool and Ola Langford Vanderpool. On Nov. 6, 1942, he married Dorothy L. Pressley who preceded him in death on Nov. 1, 2004. On March 6, 2006, he married Elvia Crafton Wilson who survives of the home. He had lived in Sedalia the last four years, but spent many years in Marshall where he was co-owner/operator of Vanderpool Residential Care. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a former member of the Marshall Optimist Club. He served in the CCC's, enlisted in the Missouri National Guard and transferred to regular U.S. Army after Pearl Harbor. He proudly served as a forward observer in the 231st Field Artillery, 6th Armored Division under General George S. Patton, U.S. Third Army from Normandy to Berlin. He was awarded five bronze stars for five major campaigns in the European Theater of Operations and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for supervising eight men laying field wire for Artillery communications in Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. He was also a sub machine gun expert and gunner on a tank.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Pat Weber and her husband, Ledru, of Marshall; one son, Jack Vanderpool and his wife, Ginny, of rural Marshall; one stepdaughter, Cathy Wilson of Sedalia; four grandchildren; several great and great-great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one brother, Frank Vanderpool of Carthage; one sister, Doris Martin of Redfield, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
