Poet. He was a French writer known for his romantic poetry themes. In 1820, he went to Paris, attended the Collège de Charlemagne and produced a notable musical French translation of Goethe’s Faust which composer Hector Berlioz drew freely upon for his opera “La Damnation de Faust”. In the following years, Nerval traveled and his writing of his preoccupations greatly influenced the Symbolists and Surrealists. One of his best works included “Voyage to the East” (1843), a travelogue that examined ancient folk mythology, symbols and religion. Some of his other poems of note were “Sylvie” (1853), “Aurélia” (1853), “The Chimeras” (1854) and “Girls of Fire” (1854). Through this period in his life, Nerval had years of mental destitution and anguish, which ended when he was found hanging from a lamppost in the rue de la Vieille Lanterne, Paris.
