Sam Monaco was the Underboss of what is now called the DeCavalcante Family in New Jersey. He had been Underboss to Stefano Badami since the 1920s. Monaco operated out of Newark,NJ and was an ally of Mafia Boss Salvatore Maranzano. On Sept. 10,1931 Monaco and one of his men, Liugi (Louis) Russo disappeared. This was the same day Maranzano was murdered. Monaco and Russo were found in Newark Bay a few days later. They had been tortured and shot to death, their bodies were weighted down and dumped in the bay. Both their bodies floated to the surface and washed ashore. (bio by: Bill Heneage)
