He was the first child of President Abraham and Mary Lincoln. Robert Todd was the only one of the sons to live into adulthood and he distinguished himself in many ways. He graduated from Harvard College in 1864. He was commissioned a captain on staff of General Grant and was present at the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Courthouse. Taking up the practice of law in Chicago where he spent most of his adult life, he was appointed president of the Pullman Car Company. In addition, he played a distinguished role in government serving as Secretary of War under Presidents Garfield and Arthur. He was later appointed minister to Great Britain by President Benjamin Harrison. After entering government service, they moved to Washington reverting to a usual routine of traveling from Washington to their summer retreat, (Hildene, Manchester, Vermont), aboard their private Pullman Coach. While at this estate on Sunday, July 25, 1926, Robert Todd Lincoln went to bed as usual, but when the butler entered the bedroom the next morning, he found Robert had passed away during the night. His physician put as the cause of death cerebral hemorrhage induced by arteriosclerosis. Private services were held on the estate and his body was placed in temporary receiving vault at a nearby Manchester cemetery. Arrangements were made and his body was moved to Arlington National Cemetery on March 14, 1928. He was the only son of the Lincoln's not to be buried in the Tomb in Springfield. Robert's son who had died earlier was brought from Springfield and placed in the same plot as was his wife upon her death.
