Thomas Epaphroditus Howle was first Lt. in Co. F in the 8th SCV Regt., and later captain. Co. F was nicknamed "The Darlington Grays", and they enlisted for one year. After 1st Manassas, T.E. returned home on a 45-day furlough to raise another unit (per act of the Confederate Congress). He was able to get about 85-90 men to enlist and returned to Virginia. These men became Co. M, 8th SCI. Capt. Howle was killed near the Dunker Church at Sharpsburg.

Note: After the war, Capt. Howle's brothers (who served in the same unit), brought his body home to be buried in the Old Black Creek Cemetery. The Pee Dee Rifles Camp of the S.C.V. still maintain his grave.
