Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 30, 1917, he lived briefly in Pittsburgh, and grew up in Atlantic City, N.J. Mr. Ghyssels moved to Pleasantville, N.J. for a while before moving to Miami, Fla., for 23 years. After retiring from his job at the Miami Herald, he moved to Palm Bay, Fla., for 20 years. In 1988, he moved to Branford to be near his family in Stony Creek.
Mr. Ghyssels was a S/Sgt. with the 77th Infantry Division in World War II, and saw action in the Philippines. He received a Bronze Star at Okinawa. He was a commercial artist for his professional life, and in retirement did watercolors and crafts for many years. He attended Friends School and Atlantic City High School and graduated from the Philadelphia School of Fine Arts. He married on July 10, 1944, and was an active member in Holy Family Church in Miami, and St. John Episcopal Church in Palm Bay. Mr. Ghyssels was a good Christian and a loving husband, a good father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him. He was well known for his sense of humor right to the end of his life and a joy to those that knew and cared for him.
He leaves a son, George "Denny" Ghyssels of Stony Creek; a daughter, Elisabeth Bragg Klemis of Duluth, Ga.; and grandchildren, Patrick Adam Ghyssels of Stony Creek; and Kevin and Scott Bragg of Duluth. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Ghyssels.
