Walter Lee Atwell, 87, passed away September 26, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. As a devout Christian, family man, active civic leader and successful businessman, he touched the lives of many people in East Texas. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his wisdom, his courage, and his strength of character. He was the son of Katie Glober Atwell and William Frank Atwell. After graduating from Ballinger High School, he began a fruitful 45-year career with Perry Brothers, Inc., retiring in 1979 as its president.
Walter moved to Lufkin in 1944 to assume a management position in Perry Brothers' corporate office. He quickly began service as an elder in the First Christian Chuch prior to his 30th birthday. Also an active choir member, Sunday school teacher and board member, he loved his church and gave of his time and talents in many capacities. As an active civic leader, he served as president of the Angelina Co. Chamber of Commerce, was a director of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce, was a member of the Lufkin Industrial Board of Trustees, was a division chairman of the United Fund, and was chairman of the Lufkin Planning and Zone Committee. He was a member of the board of directors of the Texas Retail Federation, as well as a director of the Association of General Merchandise Chains in Washington, D.C. He also served for many years on the board of directors of Memorial Hospital of Lufkin. An avid golfer, he was a past president of the Lufkin Country Club and was a charter member of Crown Colony Country Club.He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his son, Walter Lee Atwell, Jr. and his brothers, William Fred Atwell, Charles Edward Atwell, Joseph Glober Atwell and Benjamin Frank Atwell

Wife of 61 years, Mary Kathleen Thedford Atwell
Sons: Jim Atwell and wife Marty Smith, Thomas Atwell and wife Lisa, and David Atwell and wife Jeanie
Grandchildren: Elizabeth and Robert Atwell, Michael Blake, Andrew Atwell and Kathryn Vineyard.
Services for Mr. Atwell were held September 29, 2001 in the First Christian Church with burial in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
