Mrs. Mary Etta Canfield, 411 4th St. N.W., 84, died October 16 at a Tacoma hospital.

A resident of Puyallup for 36 years, she was the widow of the late George Canfield. Mrs. Canfield was born in Rose Hill, Kansas June 8, 1872. She was the daughter of Eli and Mary Ann Cox, pioneer residents of Kansas. A member of the Quaker faith, Mrs. Canfield joined the Methodist Church in Puyallup and was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was active in the W.C.T.U. having served as president and also as secretary for several years and lately as chairman of drama and speech activities. A talented reader with a remarkable memory and a keen sense of humor, Mrs. Canfield was often called upon for recitations. She was a member of the auxiliary to the V.F.W. Puyallup Valley Post No. 3224, the Past Pochahontas, Winona Council No. 13 Degree of Pochahontas. She had been an active member of the Pochahontas for years.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Elsie M Paulsen, and Mrs. Mildred L. Wadleigh of Seattle. Three sons, Roscoe W. Winn of Augusta Kansas, Lester F. Winn of Howard, Kan., and Homer Canfield of Boston Mass., a brother Clarkson K. Cox of Eugene, Ore., 19 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Oct 16 at the Hill Funeral Home. The Rev. Harvey deVries officiated. Mrs. Canfield's brother, Clarkson Cox and Mrs. Stanley Simpson sang her favorite hymns. A poem that was read at the funeral of Mrs. Canfield's mother was also read at the service. Pall bearers were Robert O. Logan, James L. Brown, James E. Boyle, Rev. Oliver Faulkner, Mr. Stevenson and Carter Harmes. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery. The Degree of Pochahontas had charge of the services at the cemetery.
