George P Durham came to Texas from Georgia to find and work for Texas Ranger Captain Leander McNelly. George's father had served under McNelly during the "War of Northern Aggression." Geroge time his trip perfectly as just a few weeks after arriving in Burton Texas to find McNelly, McNelly was called to form a special group of Texas Rangers to battle bandits and criminals in Nueces Strip area of south Texas. George was the youngest ranger to serve for McNelly. Records indicate that George was a Texas Ranger from 1875 through early 1877.
George was one of the Rangers that participated in the famous "invasion" of Mexico to recover stolen herds of Texas cattle that had been taken across the Rio Grande by Juan Flores Salinas. The battle, referred to as "The Las Cuevas Affair" is one of the most famous in Texas Ranger History.
When McNelly's Rangers were disbanded, George went to work for Richard King of the famous King Ranch, Caroline H. Chamberlain. He also married the niece of King's wife. George became a foreman over the El Sauz District of the King Ranch and worked for the King's until his death in 1940.
