US Congressman. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, he engaged in banking and with his father built the New Jersey Southern and New York, New Hampshire and Willimantic Railroads. After the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army, and was mustered in as the Sergeant Major of the 21st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 15, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the regiment's Company I on June 1, 1863. However, he was mustered out when his enlistment expired on June 19, 1863. He entered politics in his later years, and was elected Register of Hudson County, New Jersey for two terms from 1884 until 1893. In 1892 he ran as a Democrat to represent New Jersey's 7th Congressional District, winning the seat that was left vacant by the death of Congressman Edward F. McDonald. he served a single term from 1893 to 1895, and chose to not run again. He was elected to a third term as Register of Hudson County in 1895, and died in 1906 in Windham, New York. His son, James F. Fielder became the 35th Governor of New Jersey. (bio by: Frank McGady)
