Gladys Lelo was the daughter of Josephine (Jozefa) and Czeslaw Lelo. She was born in or around Milwaukee, Wisconsin Feb. 28, 1924. She was the sister of,
Eugenia, Harry "Heiromin", Chester "Czeslaw", Helen, Edward, Leon, and Alice. She married Wilbur Massingham. Together they had, William, Josephine, Thomas, Edward, and Debra. There was at least one other that died in infancy. Gladys had an older son named Frank, who's father is unknown at this point. Her husband Wilbur did adopt him. 1930's census shows her living in Chicago, Illinois. At some point the family moved to the Manchester, Iowa area. I am not certain if it was before or after Wilburs death in 1966. My father (Edward) was 11-12 at that time. After her husbands death she was left raising all 5 children alone (her oldest Frank was 23 by this time). She was devastated from losing her husband. 3 years later she would lose her oldest son Frank to a work related accident. I don't think she ever really recovered from either deaths. Life was very hard for my father and his brothers and sisters. At one point the oldest 3 were sent to foster care leaving the youngest two in the home.
My Grandma was not the most loving person, but I always loved her. Towards the end of her life she tried to make amends. She came to live with us in her last 1-2 years of life. She passed away from Lung Cancer 2 days before my 9th birthday. I love and miss you Grandma M, until we meet again!
