He shall be best remembered as successor to the legendary Al McGuire at Marquette University. Raised in St. Louis, he was a standout in basketball, baseball, and football at St. Louis University High School; after attending St. Louis University for one year he joined the US Marine Corps in 1943. Following World War II he returned to college, playing both basketball and baseball for the Billikens. Graduating in 1949, he was drafted by the Boston Braves but instead worked as an insurance for one year before becoming head basketball coach at St. Louis University High School. Raymonds served as head coach at Memphis' Christian Brothers College between 1955 and 1961 compiling a 110 win 50 loss record, then became an assistant at Marquette University in Milwaukee until taking over the top job when Al McGuire retired in 1977. In six seasons he guided the Warriors to 126 wins and 50 losses with five NCAA tournament appearances. After serving as Marquette's athletic director thru 1987 he retired and remained in Milwaukee. Coach Raymonds was named to the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 and died following a long battle with cancer. (bio by: Bob Hufford)
