Thomas Jefferson Howarth was born in Leicester MA to Thomas and Hannah Pearl (Marston) Howarth. The family moved to Richmond VA sometime before 1849 where his mother and infant sister died from cholera. After his mother's death his father decided to try his luck in the gold rush and left Thomas and his older sister Lizzy (Mary Elizabeth) to be raised by their widowed grandmother Dolly (Stott)Howarth. He served in a Virgina regiment of the Confederate Army, then was "galvonized" into the Union Army as a prisoner of war. He also served in the 4th Regiment US Volunteers in Fort Randall during the Dakota Indian Uprising. After the war (15 Jun 1874) he married Nancy Jane Bovee in Blair, NE where they raised 11 children. William, Mary Elizabeth, Nelson, Victor Jay, Herman, Harrison, Clara Pearl, Cora Merton, Frank Lester, Jessie May, and Thomas Walton.
