Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War at first as a 1st Lieutenant in the 21st Illinois Volunteer Infantry, then was assigned to the staff of Major General Ulysses S. Grant, with whom he served as an additional Aide-de-Camp, rising to the rank of Colonel. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war".
