From Illinois Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church dated 1919, p106-107.

John B. Martin was born at Burlington, Vermont, June 30, 1848, and died July 25, 1919, at the age of 71 years and 25 days. While a small boy his parents moved to Darlington, Wisconsin, where he grew to manhood. In 1863 he enlisted as a volunteer in the Third Wisconsin Infantry, and fought for "Old Glory" to the close of the war.

In 1870 he came to Jacksonville, Illinois, where he held several responsible positions with the different railroads. He was converted in a revival held by Horace Reed in 1880, and immediately began preaching the gospel. He joined the Illinois Conference in 1882, and remained an honored member, with effective relationship to the time of his death. He ceased at once to labor and to live. He was statistical secretary of the Conference for 20 years. He served the following charges successively and efficiently: Manchester, Chandlerville, Grand View, Bethany, Windsor, Vermillion, Tower Hill, Belleflower, Potomac, Pawnee, Blue Mound, Humbolt, Gifford, Dewey, Minier, Garrett, La Place, Girard, Tolono, Ogden and Astoria.

Brother Martin was a man of rugged strength and noble character. He was a preacher of solid, substantial and spiritual qualities. No uncertain sound escaped his lips in the proclamation of the truth. Many souls saved and edified by his ministry will rise up and call him blessed. He was such a good man that his chaplet of goodness will be a royal crown to be eternally worn.

He leaves to deplore his sudden departure, his wife and seven sons and daughters, his death being the first break in the family circle. His children are, C. A. Martin, Vermillion; Mrs. Lucy Foor and Dr. F. A. Martin, Tower Hill; Mrs. Geo. Carson, Belleflower; Dr. J. W. Martin, Oliver; Rev. J. B. Martin, Elgin; and Miss Carrie Martin, resident in the home. Funeral services were held in the church, Astoria, July 28th, A. S. Flanigan, of Quincy, District Superintendent, in charge, with burial at Tower Hill, a former charge, where Mrs. and Miss Martin will make their home.
