Laney was the daughter of William Skinner and Lucinda Catherine "Lucy" Mozingo of Conecuh County, Alabama. She married twice: (1) Sheldrake Kendrick (2) Labon Hobbs

She grew up in Conecuh County, Alabama. When married to Sheldrake Kendrick they lived at Mt. Olive, Alabama (Butler County) in his home. He died in 1879. When she married Labon Hobbs they seemed to have moved around a bit.

In 1900, Laney and Labon Hobbs were living in Chilton County, Alabama, where Laney's son Dick Kendrick and sister Mahalia Fuller lived with their families. Laney and Labon also lived in the area of the Byrneville Community (Escambia County, Florida). Byrneville was the comminity that Laney's brother-in-law, Bob Kendrick founded in 1860 and where Laney's daughters Ann Adair, Frances Gilmore and Lou Gilmore lived.Laney died in 1902 and is buried at Byrneville Cemetery. Labon died in 1912 in Autauga County, Alabama (near Chilton County, where and and Laney had lived earlier).
