Mrs. Robert Carter, Sr. was the first President of the Ladies Memorial Association organized after the Civil War, to decorate the soldiers̓ graves and perpetuate the memory of the Confederate dead, the first such organization in the United States. She held the office for thirty-five years, until her death.
