Thomas was a veteran of the War of 1812. He served under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. Thomas and his father-in-law, Solomon Skaggs, were living in Davidson County, TN in 1814 when Thomas enlisted in Captain William Mullen's Company of the 1st Infantry Regiment, West Tennessee Militia. It was part of the 2nd Division of Tennessee Militia under the command of Major-General William Carroll.
Part of General Carroll's division arrived by mid-December via the Mississippi River at New Orleans, and encountered the British in a skirmish on December 28, 1814. In a major battle on January 8, 1815, the Tennessee Division helped the American forces defeat the British leaving 1500 soldiers dead or wounded on the battlefield. Although the war was over before the battle, it was a serious defeat for Britain.

Thomas Wadsworth and Solomon Skaggs, with their families, probably moved back to Green County, KY after the war. Solomon disappears from the public records before 1820. Thomas and Solomon's wife, Rhoda, with their families, migrate to southern Indiana by 1820.
