Details Not Given in Message - Mother and Brother Leave for Los Angeles
William H. Phelps, Jr. son of the late Col W. H. Phelps of Carthage, died yesterday morning in Los Angeles, California, according to a message received by Mrs. W. H. Phelps, Sr., his step-mother.
The message did not state the cause of Mr. Phelps' death which was at least comparatively sudden, he not having been ill recently, according to letters received here.
Mrs. W. H. Phelps and son George, left this afternoon for Los Angeles to attend the funeral. Arrangements for the services will not be made until their arrival there.
Mr. Phelps would have been 46 years old September 13. He was born and reared in Carthage, going to Los Angeles nine years ago. He was engaged in the real estate business in California. He erected several apartment houses and was said to have been very successful in business ventures there. Before leaving Carthage, he was engaged in farming and was also employed in the First National Bank for a time.
Surviving are his wife and four children;
William, Howe, Josephine and Helen, also his step-mother and the half brother George Phelps, of Carthage and a sister, Mrs. W. H. Rothbert of Los Angeles.
Prior to a year ago Mr. Phelps had been in poor health for some time but recently had been much improved. Last month he started to Carthage by motor car but had motor trouble and turned back to Los Angeles, deferring his Carthage trip.

INVENTORY OF W. H. PHELPS, JR. ESTATE FILED HERE
Son of Late Colonel W. H. Phelps Ended Life by Shooting in California
Judge Howard Gray of Carthage in probate court today was appointed ancillary administrator of the estate of the late William Phelps with will annexed, to attend to the administration property of the estate in Missouri.
Mr. Phelps was the son of the late Colonel W. H. Phelps of Carthage and was himself a former Carthage resident. His death occurred in Los Angeles, California August 14, 1927. Mr. Phelps committed suicide by shooting himself. The cause of his death was not generally known here at the time. Ill health was blamed for Mr. Phelps' action, he having suffered much agony from recurring attacks of a pain in his head, attributed to an old injury received some years ago when he received a blow on the head in an accident at his farm near Carthage.
The attacks had increased in severity in recent years, it is said.
Copies of Mr. Phelps will and inventory of the estate as made in California were filed here today. The appraisal showed property estimated worth $541,981 consisting principally of California real estate, also bonds and other personal property.
According to the application for appointment of an ancillary administrator filed here, real estate belonging to the estate in Missouri is worth $1,500 and personal property $1,000. Judge Gray furnished $2,000 bond as administrator.
Mr. Phelps' will was drawn on March 25, 1927. It left $5,000 and personal effects to his wife and the remainder of the estate in trust to the Citizens Trust & Savings Bank of Los Angeles, which was named as the executor. The entire income of the estate, it was instructed, was to be paid to the widow during her life-time or so long as she remained a widow. In case of re-marriage, the widow was to receive one-fifth of the income, the other four-fifths to go to their four children. At the wife's death the entire income was to go equally to the children, the principal to be so apportioned to them when they became 30 years of age, respectively.
The widow is Laura B. Phelps.
