Homocide - death by gun shot wound

The Elizabethtown News

Friday, October 31, 1913

Yesterday Will Fryrear shot and killed Joe Nicholls on a public road near the Meeting Creek Baptist Church. Fryrear went to the house of Deputy Sheriff Jack Shipley last night and gave himself up. He will be brought to E'town today. The tragedy is said to have followed a drunken row, the details of which are not known. It was claimed that both Fryrear and Nicholls were under the influence of liquor. The killing occurred within a short distance of Josh Wilhelm's home and Wilhelm was on the road near the two men when the fatal shot was fired. Mrs. Wilhelm is also said to have seen the affair from a window. Fryrear fired a pistol. No weapons were found on Nicholls body. Death was instantaneous to him and his body was taken to Wilhelm's home. The funeral services take place this afternoon at Meeting Creek Baptist Church. Nicholls was about 48 years old and was a tie-maker. He lived on a farm of Geo. Morris, near Stephensburg. He leaves his wife and large family of children. Fryrear was between 55 and 60 years old and has been twice married. He is a member of a large family and resides in Meeting Creek precinct.
