Civil War Private, Co G., 10th Reg., Maine Volunteers. Enlisted 27 Nov 1961, at Portland, ME. That fall and the following winter (1861-62), his regiment was stationed at the Relay House, Maryland, guarding the Baltimore and Ohio Railway. The entire regiment suffered from exposure. Amos had rheuatism, dysentry and typhoid fever, and was hospitalized in June 1862, remained hospitalized until he mustered out of service, 8 May 1863, at Portland, ME.
Amos was a farmer before and after the war. In 1869 and for several years, he was foreman of a small crew on the Grand Trunk Railroad.

His rheumatism became worse over the years, and by 1920, both legs had been amputated at the thigh.
