Misc Newspaper Clippings:
a.) Bloomington (Monroe County, Indiana) Hawkeye, February 24, 1881, p.3

Charles H. Cates completed his years service in jail last Saturday at 9:30a.m. He was sued something over a year ago by Mary Mathews for bastardy, and the suit eventuated in his incarceration in jail for that period. Most of our citizens believe his declarations, often made, of innocency. We not the curious fact that on the day after Cates' release from imprisonment the family of the man who contributed most to Cates' discomfort was afflicted by a ravishment of one of its members under the most humiliating circumstances, that that family left town under an ominous cloud, and that that man himself is having more trouble than cheerful Charley ever had in his gloomiest hours. Looks like the providence of God, to the preachers, and like the "whirligig of time" to the balance of us.

"Put her thar, Charley, glad you're out."

b.) Bloomington (Monroe County, Indiana) Telephone, July 14, 1899, p. 1.

Charles Cates, the well known hotel hustler who has been connected with the Gentry and Bundy for several years, has gone to Gosport and with his wife will take charge of the sanitarium at that place.
