His official Confederate States Army record reads: CLAY, ELI L., Private, Company B, 8th Battalion N.C. Junior Reserves - CLAY, ELI L., Private, Resided in Catawba County. Enlisted at Camp Stokes, near Greensboro, November 24, 1864, for the war. Captured at Fort Fisher on December 25, 1864. Confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia, December 29, 1864. Sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, December 31, 1864. Transferred to Company E, 3rd Regiment N.C. Junior Reserves, January 3, 1865, while a prisoner of war. [North Carolina Troops - 1861-1865-A Roster, N.C.; Vol. 7:454]
CLAY, ELI L., Private, Company B, 3rd Battalion, N.C. Junior Reserves - Previously served as Private in Company B, 8th Battalion N.C. Junior Reserves. Transferred to this company on January 3, 1865, while a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Maryland. Released at Point Lookout on June 24, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
