James Devine, one of Adams county's most influential and respected citizens, died at his home at Edgegrove at 6:25 p.m., Monday, November 1, after an illness of several months, from a complication of diseases, aged 79 years, 3 months, and 24 days. Mr. Devine was a life long Democrat, and was honored by his party by being elected to various offices. He was County Comissioner from 1897 to 1900, and served a number of terms as school director, tax collector, supervisor, and in other local offices. He was a son of the late William Devine and was married 58 years ago to Miss Agnes Klunk, daughter of the late John Klunk, of Hanover, who survives him, with five sons - John and James Devine, Edgegrove; Harry F. Devine of Bittinger; Eugene Devine, of Littlestown; W. P. Devine, proprietor of Hotel O'Bold, Hanover; and two daughters - Mrs. Joseph Kaehler, of Catonsville, Md., and Mrs. R. T. Sneeringer, of Edgegrove. For about 40 years Mr. Devine was tenant on the famous Conewago Chapel farm at Edgegrove, retiring there from about two years ago and living retired since then. Funeral Thursday, Nov. 4, at 9 a.m. at Conewago Chapel, with a solemn mass of requiem. Interment in Conewago Chapel Cemetery, Rev. Father Germanus Kohl officiating.
