Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. A career US Army officer, he garduated from West Point in 1868 and served principally on Western Frontier duty until the Spanish American War. Serving as a First Lieutenant, 5th US Cavalry, he was in command of a reconnoitering party in actions against hostile Indians at the White River, Colorado, on October 20, 1879. While going to the rescue of fellow troopers, he was himself attacked by about 35 warriors. During the engagement he several times exposed himself in order to draw the fire of the assailants so he could locate the trooper's position enabling his small party to retrieve them. For most distinguished gallantry, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in September, 1897. He later served as Adjutant General to the Department of Puerto Rico and retired from active duty a Brigadier General on June 11, 1912.
