The California Highway Patrol was formed in 1929 and Officer Carey was the 159th CHP officer killed in the line-of-duty.

On February 24, 1982, CHP Pilot-Officer George R. Carey, ID #4044, and Flight Officer Kenneth L. Archer, ID #7255, were killed when their CHP helicopter crashed during a search mission in the Harper Lake area west of Barstow.

Officer Carey was a 17-year veteran of the Highway Patrol and had worked in the Indio and Visalia Area offices before becoming a departmental helicopter pilot in 1981.

Officer Carey was 47 years old.
