Mary and her husband, Arthur Parke, loved fixing and renovating their old house in West Chester. Originally called Five Acres, they later acquired more land and called the property Springhouse. The enlarging, renovating and decorating of the house was their hobby and preoccupation for their entire lifetime together. They added several wings to the small house, as well as a swimming pool and a farm pond, to make the house a showplace.
Mary was an excellent gardener and a frequent prizewinner in Garden Club competitions. She loved to play cards, both bridge and poker, and played mahjong well. After her children were grown, Mary took up golf and eventually excelled, winning the top women's prizes at the local golf club for several years.
Mary and Arthur were married for 48 years. Two years after his death she married Gibbons Gray Cornwell, Jr. They were involved in a car accident a little over a year after their marriage that took Mary's life.
