Ephraim was the 2nd son and 4th child of 7 born to Ephraim Smith & Hannah Melissa (Gotee) Williams. His father was the 1st postmaster of Saginaw at the time he was born, having been appointed by President Jackson.
It is thought he spent his first 5 years or so in Saginaw, when that town was just beginning to form, perhaps helping in a limited way at the steam sawmill of his father and uncle, the "G.D. & E.S. Williams" mill.
On 1 Jan 1857, at the age of 21, he married Harriet Camp Beach in Wales Twp., St. Clair County at the home of Harriet's father Horace Beach.
Harriet, born 15 Feb 1837 in Connecticut, was the eldest child of Horace A. and Catherine (Giddings) Beach, both of whom came from New York to the young state of Michigan with their 5 children a little after 1850.
He started work with his brother-in-law, Hiram Walker, at the young distillery in what would become Walkerville, Essex, Ontario, just across the Detroit River. He was employed in a number of different capacities there for at least 15 years, and probably more.
Ephraim was a bookkeeper in a lumber office in 1880, and was living in Maple Valley, Montcalm County, Michigan, he and Hattie having 7 children by that time.
Their children were:
1. Kate M., b.1858; m.1878 F.W. Allen
2. Cora M., b.1861, d.1863 (infant)
3. Frederick C., b./d.1865 (infant)
4. Bertie C., b.1866, m.1888 W.C.N. Tiffany
5. Maude B., b.1867, never married
6. Mary H., b.1869, m.1895 A.J. Willson
7. Edward S., b.1871, d.1872 (infant), and
8. Jessie I., b.1881, m.1907 H.M. Cason
By at least 1900 he was employed again with the Hiram Walker & Sons distillery, he being a manager of the Walkerville factory. He and Harriet lived in Detroit at that time, however, having their residence at 708 E. Congress St.
He retired from the Walker distillery before 1907, the year he suffered a fall, the effects of which he suffered until the time of his death in 1911.
His obituary on March 26th said:
