Hilliard Bridges entered the Confederate service as a private early in 1862 at Loachapoka, Alabama, as a member of the 24th Alabama Infantry. He received a foot wound and was captured near the Cumberland Gap. He was exchanged because of the wound and returned to his unit. Given a discharge, he returned home. Then, after his foot healed, he chewed up his discharge and re-enlisted in September 1863, this time as a private in Company A, 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He remained with this unit until the end of the war.
On May 2, 1887 he was appointed County Commissioner, district three, St. Clair County, Alabama.
On November 11, 1898 he was appointed Justice of the Peace and served until his death.
Although he never attended law school, he studied his law books and his Bible and was often asked to interpret the law for other judges and lawyers.
