James' parents, Peter Smith & Abigail Archer, moved from Orange County, New York to the wilderness of western New York in 1809 with their first child, Lucinda. James was their first son, born on January 29, 1812. Soon after James' birth, Peter joined the United States Army and fought in the War of 1812. When the war was over, Peter returned to his family and continued to carve his homestead from the forest.

James married Hannah Banfield. They settled in nearby Schuyler County. Both James and Hannah are buried in the Mecklinburg Cemetery. Their headstone reads "James A. Smith January 29, 1812 December 23, 1877, Hannah his wife April 1, 1809 November 13, 1882"
