Urbanus Edmund Baughman was the chief of the United States Secret Service from 1948 to 1961, serving under Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy. He retired from this post on August 31, 1961, just over two years before Kennedy's assassination. After retiring, he penned a memoir detailing his time as head of the United States Secret Service, which explored details and responsibilities of protecting the president. He later became a vocal critic of the protection detail and investigative handling of the Kennedy Assassination. He died from arteriosclerotic heart disease at the Community Memorial Hospital in Tom's River, New Jersey.
