Alma Ruth Austin ne Beard was born on a farm outside Milk River, Alberta, Canada in 1910 To Ora Mae and Henry Fred Beard, who had recently immigrated from Indiana (1907/08) to Alberta, Canada to homestead. She grew up on the farm and attended the 215 school and later school in Milk River. She married Donald Atkinson in 1926 while living in Newberg,Ore with her family. She attended George Fox University with her good friend Lucy Hollingsworth. Her marriage to Don Atkinson ended after a few years and 2 children Robert And Virginia remained with their mother after the divorce. She was living in Portland,Ore at the time. Her best friend Lucy (Hollingsworth)Austin was married to Robert Austin Sr at the time. Lucy contracted Rhuematic fever in 1935 and while in the hospital asked Alma to take care of Robert her husband. Lucy died Oct 1, 1935 and Alma married Robert Austin on the 20th of Jan, 1936. They were married for 46 years and lived in Portland, Manila,PI, Washington DC, and during WWII Alma lived with her family in Rossland, BC, Canada while Bob served in the Army overseas. They moved to Boise after the war. Alma had 3 daughters and 4 sons. Alma was a life member of the DAV's Womens Auxilary, the VFW Womens Auxilary, and recieved an Award for 6057 Volunteer Hours at the Boise Veterans Hospital as of 1990. She was a loving mother and gave all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren unconditional love. She loved her doggies and had several over her lifetime. She died on Veterans Day 1998 a very fitting end to a well lived life. Her family misses her humour, unconditional love and gracious presence.
