MRS. H. HOLMES, PIONEER, DIES

Mrs. Helen Holmes, one of the earliest colored settlers of the city and mother of Emmett H. Holmes, formerly a deputy county treasurer, died yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the residence, E961 Hartson avenue.
Mrs. Holmes and her husband, the late John R. Holmes, settled in Spokane 25 years ago. Three daughters, the son and five grandchildren survive. The daughters are Mrs. Eliza Stafford, Mrs. C.J. Flowers and Mrs. Joseph Bryant. Before coming to Spokane Mrs. Holmes resided at Vicksburg, Miss.
Funeral services will be held from Smith & Co's undertaking rooms Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The Rev. F.L. Donohoe of the A.M.E. church will officiate. Mrs. Holmes aided in organizing the church over which the pastor resides. Burial will take place at Fairmount cemetery.
