One of the managers appointed by the House of Representatives in 1868 to conduct the impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson; was tendered the position of the Secretary of State in the Cabinet of President Ulysses Grant but declined; subsequently appointed by President Grant as government director of the Union Pacific Railroad and served 8 years; elected as Republican to the US Senate in 1882 and reelected in 1888.
