When the Civil War started be was commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers, and assigned as a Commissary of Subsistence. His subsequent service was first as Chief Commissary of Subsistence for IV Corps in the Army of the Cumberland, then as the Chief Commissary of Subsistence for the Army of the Tennessee. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “faithful and meritorious services as Chief Commissary of Subsistence of the 4th Army Corps, and afterwards of the Army of the Tennessee during the campaigns of Atlanta, Savannah and the Carolinas”.
