Scientist. Specialist in Environmental biology, he made extensive studies and surveys of wildlife in North America. During his tenure with the United States Forest Service (1909 to 1933) he was a tireless defend of wildlife preservation, and advanced the concept of preserving Wildlife and Wilderness areas for their own sake and for their own beauty.
His oldest son, A. (Aldo) Starker Leopold (October 22, 1913 - August 23, 1983), was also a noted professor, author and conservationist like his father.
