Dorothy "Gretchen" Van Ness Gufler Pihl of 60 Hasell Street, wife of Rear Admiral Paul Edward Pihl, USN (Ret.), died Friday at her residence.

The funeral will be in Topeka, Kansas, where she will be buried with her first husband, according to Stuhr's.

Mrs. Pihl was born April 13, 1905, in Chicago, a daughter of Franklin Van Ness and Jenny Carolyn Sullivan Van Ness. Mrs. Pihl was first married to Bernard Gufler, who was U.S. ambassador to Finland and later to Ceylon. He also served as inspector general for the U.S. State Department. They lived for many years abroad.

Mrs. Pihl played the piano, collected porcelain and was a patron of the arts, especially music. She attended Salem Female Academy at Winston-Salem, N.C., and Randolph Macon College, Va. She attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

Surviving are her husband; and a sister, Jane Carolyn Van Ness of Greensboro, N.C.
