Sandy Sigler, 49, outreach worker
By Brian J. Back
Sandy Harrington Sigler, 49, well known for her enthusiasm for helping others, lost her battle with breast cancer Thursday at Vencor Hospital.
Mrs. Sigler was a campaign director at United Way of Atlanta, where she worked with corporate executives who volunteered for fund-raising. Her clients included BellSouth, Equifax, and J.C. Penney.
"You're a better salesperson when you believe in what you're selling," said husband, Harold W. Sigler of McDonough. "She believed in United Way."
He said she frequently exceeded fund-raising goals and set examples for other United Way employees. She was presented the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award for enthusiasm and organizational skills.
Her volunteer work spilled over into other community activities. She sometimes would visit hospitals to hold and feed "crack" babies, and was a Big Sister, said her sister, Kathy Smith Givens of Charlotte.
Before working with United Way, Mrs. Sigler was a training instructor with Eastern Airlines for 28 years, until the company shut down.
"She didn't want to leave," said her daughter, Jaime Harrington of Atlanta.
Mr. Sigler said his wife loved to teach and was loved by her students, who often presented her with plaques and trophies at the end of a course.
"In the classroom, your eyes were fixed," he said. "She was one hell of a listener and I think her students appreciated that." Mrs. Givens remembers when Sandy went with others from Eastern and their spouses to Korea to bring back some orphaned children who were to be adopted in the United States.
Memorial service plans will be announced by H.M. Paterson & Son, Spring Hill.
Mrs. Sigler also is survived by step-daughter, Courtney Sigler of Atlanta; and her mother, Rose S. Smith Huneycutt of Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Cancer Institute, Financial Management Branch (indicate breast cancer research), Building 31, room 11A16, Bethesda, Md. 20892.
