The Chico Enterprise (Chico, California) 15 Mar 1937, Monday Page 1: City Employee Dies Suddenly in Restaurant. Stricken with a heart attack yesterday shortly before midnight, Matthew Stoffels, a resident of Chico for more than 40 years and an employee of the city in the street department since May 1926, died last night in the Sandwich Inn where he had gone for a midnight lunch. Mrs. Stoffels died February 7 of this year, slightly over a month ago.
When Stoffels fell from a stool at the restaurant, the Westfall ambulance was called and took the stricken man to the Enloe hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Deceased was widely known here. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Souza of Berkeley, Mrs. Juanita Cronin and Miss Helen Stoffels of Oakland, and one son, Lauren Stoffels of Pleasanton, California. Funeral arrangements are being completed by the Westfall Funeral Home.
