Second Man Enters Race From Ward 5

Gastonia's Ward 5 now has two candidates for a city council seat in the May 4 municipal election. A mailing machine salesman for Pitney Bowes, James Milton Smith, filed Monday afternoon. Smith who lives at 908 N. Broad St. is making his first bid for an elective office.

Robert L. Withers, chief clerk and accountant for Gas Pipe Line Corp, also filed Monday from Ward 5. The Ward 5 seat is now held by Marshall Rauch, who is not running. Smith works for Pitney-Bowes Inc. covering the area of Gaston County. He came here from Charlotte in 1956 at that time with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co.

He and his wife, the former Rose Simril, have two children: Sandra, 17 and Kathy, 13. Smith said he has been planning for about two years to run for the city council and added now appears to be the right time to run and to serve.

He said that if elected, he will do as good a job as possible. He said he is running as an independent. Smith is a member of First Methodist Church and past president of the Builders Class. He is an officer in Gastonia Lodge AF AM, and a member of the Gaston Shrine Club, and the Oasis Temple. He is also a De-Molay advisor. He is on the membership committee of the Chamber of Commerce.
