Obituary - Prominent Magrath Man Dies
MAGRATH – Death of Christian Jensen of Magrath occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. H. Robinson Monday following a lengthy illness.
Born in Ephriam, Utah on Nov 17, 1868, he married Miss Allie Rogers in 1894 and came to Canada in July, 1903 settling in Magrath.
He and his brothers operated extensive farming interest in Magrath district, harvesting 1,000 acres of wheat in 1908 and 80,000 bushels in 1915. He also ran large numbers of cattle and sheep.
SERVED AS MAYOR
As a community leader and Magrath’s second mayor, he served on the town council and school board and was an active member of the LDS Church. He served two missions in the Samoan Islands for the church.
He was one of the founders of the Alberta Wheat Pool. He was president of Alberta Wool Growers Association for years and a promoter of irrigation in Southern Alberta. The Jensen reservoir and Jensen dam south of Magrath are named in honor of his services in that field.
His wife pre-deceased him in 1944. He is survived by one son, L. R. Jensen, president of Alberta Sugar Beets Growers Association and four daughters. There are 28 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be in Magrath First Ward Church Friday.
