Held from the Church of Christ in St. Joseph Yesterday.
St. Joseph, April 18. -The funeral of Mrs. Amanda Swearingen was held Thursday afternoon and was the largest attended of any funeral that has been held here in years. The funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock in the afternoon from the Church of Christ, by B. H. Lindville, the pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. J. W. Porter of Rantoul. Interment was made in the Patterson cemetery. The pall bearers were John James, Lew E. Stevenson, John Walker, N. L. Walker, A. O. Peters and I. N. Walker. The decedent was the daughter of John K. Patterson, who donated the ground for the Patterson cemetery and who was one of the first residents of St. Joseph. This cemetery has been unique in that it has been a free burial ground for the people of this vicinity. The decedent was one of the wealthiest women and best known persons in this section of Champaign county. Among those who attended the funeral from out of town were the following: Mr. and Mrs. Busey of Urbana; Mr. and Mrs. Michael Miller of Charleston; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cailey of Tolono; Miss Grace Davis of Mason City; Miss Sue Deacon of Danville; mrs. Meta Strong, Mrs. Calie Swearingen, Mr. and Mrs. John V. Swearingen, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Swearingen of Champaign; John Cailey and Mrs. Florence Thompson of McClure, O.
The deceased was born at the Patterson homestead near St. Joseph on November 1, 1846. She departed this life at her home here on April 14, 1913. At the time of her death she was sixty-six years, five months and two days old. She was a daughter of John K. and Amanda Patterson. On March 28, 1872, she was married to Van B. Swearingen. To this union three children were born, two deceased, and Mrs. Maude O. Davis, wife of Dr. H. E. Davis. The three, Mrs. Swearingen and Dr. and Mrs. Davis, have made their home together for many years. Mrs. Swearingen also leaves one brother, Otto Swearingen of St. Joseph, and one step-son, Grant Swearingen of Champaign. She united with the Church of Christ in 1879 under the ministry of Elder J. W. Perkins. During the entire period of her membership she was one of the pillars of the church and one of the most willing workers.
